Mac: The Life and Work of Malcolm Hulke

Release Date 31 March 2015

Category: Autobiography

Mac: The Life and Work of Malcolm Hulke

by John Williams

Malcolm Hulke wrote some of the best-loved Doctor Who stories and novelizations and his work continues to be influential long after his premature death in 1979. All the various manifestations of Doctor Who since then, including the New Adventure novels, the Big Finish audio adventures and the 2005 series have returned regularly to his creations, particularly the Silurians and Sea Devils, but also to his abiding ideas and themes.

Despite this enduring influence, little is known about the man himself aside from his background as a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and the bare facts of his career as a writer. That career involved writing for some landmark television series including Armchair Theatre, Pathfinders in Space, The Avengers, Crossroads and, of course, Doctor Who. Hulke also had a flourishing career in non-fiction writing, most notably when he used his many years of experience to produce “Writing for Television in the 1970s” which became the standard text in its field.”

Hulke was the writers’ writer. He was always professional, never missed a deadline and would take pride in turning his hand to anything. Although engaged in an intensely solitary profession he constantly forged alliances either with other writers such as Eric Paice and Terrance Dicks, or enthusiastically engaged with socially significant group endeavours such as Unity Theatre or the Writers’ Guild. All these aspects of his life will be explored in depth and add to the picture of a complex and paradoxical individual.

For five decades, the name Verity Lambert appeared on the end credits of many of Britain’s most celebrated and talked about television dramas, among them Adam Adamant Lives!, Budgie, The Naked Civil Servant, Minder, Edward and Mrs Simpson, Eldorado, G.B.H. and Jonathan Creek. She was the very first producer of Doctor Who, which she nurtured through its formative years at a time when there were few women in positions of power in the television industry. Later, she worked within the troubled British film business and became a pioneering independent producer, founding her own highly-successful company, Cinema Verity.

Within her profession, she was hugely respected as an intensely driven, sometimes formidable but always stylish exponent of her craft, with the stamina and ability to combine quantity with quality. Many of her productions have had a lasting cultural and emotional impact on their audiences and continue to be enjoyed to this day.

But who was the woman behind all these television triumphs and what was the price she paid to achieve them?

Combining months of painstaking research and interviews with many of Lambert’s closest friends and colleagues, Drama and Delight will capture the energy and spirit of this remarkable woman and explore her phenomenal and lasting legacy.

terrahawks.jpg ? On Order £30.00

Release Date 24 April 2015

Category: Cult Series Drama

“Terrahawks, stay on this channel…”

Back in action after thirty years comes Terrahawks, the fondly remembered action adventure comedy originally brought to you by the men who created Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Dick Spanner.

In the not too distant future, the Earth finds itself under constant threat from Zelda, a blood-thirsty android who, along with her fiendish family and monstrous creations, has established a base on Mars. The only thing standing between this evil queen and her quest for the ultimate annihilation of mankind are the Terrahawks – an intrepid band of heroes led by the stern but fair clone, Doctor Tiger Ninestein.

After a considerable period of inaction, the Terrahawks once again find themselves called into action when Zelda initiates a brand new campaign of destruction and devastation. Facing up against terrifying time travellers, fraudulent financial fiascos, sickening stand-ups, and deadly doppelgangers – their new adventures could prove to be the Terrahawks’ most challenging missions to date!

Eight episodes on four CDs, with a bonus, behind-the-scenes CD featuring interviews with the cast and crew.

1: The Price is Right by Jamie Anderson

With the prospect of budget cuts and a spot inspection looming over their head, the Terrahawks intend to showcase themselves to the best of their ability. A surprise attack from Zelda, however, gives them a bigger chance to demonstrate their worth than originally bargained for.

2: Deadly Departed by Stephen La Rivière and Andrew T. Smith

After an epic battle, it appears that Zelda has finally shuffled of her mortal coil, but when their beloved matriarch’s will is read her android family is disgusted to discover that she has left everything to Ninestein. In retaliation, they organise a funeral the likes of which has never been seen.

3: A Clone of My Own by Andrew T. Smith and Stephen La Rivière

When his clones begin to fall foul of mysterious circumstances, Ninestein is forced to face some difficult home truths.

4: Clubbed to Death by Stephen La Rivière and Andrew T. Smith with Jamie Anderson

A night on the town turns deadly for the Terrahawks when the desperate proprietor of a hot new club just so happens to be in serious debt with Zelda’s new loan shark venture.

5: No Laughing Matter by Terry Adlam

Zelda intends to use her latest creation - Cy Splitter, the universe's funniest cyborg - to leave her enemies helpless with laughter. The Terrahawks only hope is that Twostein can play that game.

6: Timesplit by Chris Dale

Past, present and futures collide when an audacious plan by Zelda's Time Lord leads to the capture of one of the Terrahawks. Zelda is thrilled, but will the resulting temporal instability unravel the fabric of space and time?

Zelda conspires to help the Terrahawks enter the record books when a seed of destruction is sewn on Hiro’s happy birthday.

8: Into the Breach by Mark Woollard
