Mac: The Life and Work of Malcolm Hulke

Mac: The Life and Work of Malcolm Hulke

by John Williams

Malcolm Hulke wrote some of the best-loved Doctor Who stories and novelizations and his work continues to be influential long after his premature death in 1979. All the various manifestations of Doctor Who since then, including the New Adventure novels, the Big Finish audio adventures and the 2005 series have returned regularly to his creations, particularly the Silurians and Sea Devils, but also to his abiding ideas and themes.

Despite this enduring influence, little is known about the man himself aside from his background as a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and the bare facts of his career as a writer. That career involved writing for some landmark television series including Armchair Theatre, Pathfinders in Space, The Avengers, Crossroads and, of course, Doctor Who. Hulke also had a flourishing career in non-fiction writing, most notably when he used his many years of experience to produce “Writing for Television in the 1970s” which became the standard text in its field.”

Hulke was the writers’ writer. He was always professional, never missed a deadline and would take pride in turning his hand to anything. Although engaged in an intensely solitary profession he constantly forged alliances either with other writers such as Eric Paice and Terrance Dicks, or enthusiastically engaged with socially significant group endeavours such as Unity Theatre or the Writers’ Guild. All these aspects of his life will be explored in depth and add to the picture of a complex and paradoxical individual.
