Myth Makers: Paul McGann

A hugely successful television and film actor, Paul McGann played the Eighth incarnation of Doctor Who in the 1996 television film - a pilot that, sadly, was never taken to series. However that wasn’t the end … Paul has since reprised the role in an ongoing series of audio plays by Big Finish.


Also, as part of Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, Paul starred in the mini-episode The Night of the Doctor, where his Doctor finally regenerates - 17 years after his first television appearance! Then, in November 2013 he also briefly appeared in the comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.


A lot for Ace interviewer Sophie Aldred to discuss with Paul when Myth Makers finally caught up with him at Island Con, held on the Isle of Wight, in 2018.


Myth Makers Peter Bryant Team

Myth Makers Peter Grimwade

Peter Grimwade started his career at the BBC as a production assistant during the early 1970s and worked on three of Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who stories. He went on to direct Doctor Who in the early 1980’s with Logopolis and Earthshock winning major fan awards.


He then moved on successfully to script-writing with Mawdryn Undead and Planet of Fire which he successfully turned into novels for Virgin Publishing.


Peter died in 1990, cutting short his life and a promising career. This Myth Makers release is dedicated to him.

PETER MILES is best known to DOCTOR WHO fans for his role in the classic GENESIS OF THE DALEKS. His portrayal of NYDER, the cynical, ruthless and devoted aide to DAVROS - creator of the Daleks - won him praise and a fame he hadn't known before. During a long and successful career, PETER played two other parts in DOCTOR WHO...as Dr Lawrence in THE SILURIANS and Professor Whitaker in INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS. Myth Makers Philip Hinchcliffe

After studying English at Cambridge, Philip joined ITV and worked for several years as a script editor. He joined the BBC in 1974 and produced three seasons of Doctor Who featuring the debut of Tom Baker in the title role.

Over the years, he has been a contributor on numerous DVD releases of his programmes, in particular Doctor Who, for which he has recently written some new stories for Big Finish.

In this Myth Makers, shot on location at the Doctor Who Appreciation Society’s own Myth Makers event in 2014, Philip talks to Nick Briggs about his successful career in television and film, plus the thinking and planning behind his three years in charge of Doctor Who working with Robert Holmes as Script Editor.




Myth Makers Philip Martin

Philip Martin wrote the Doctor Who stories Vengeance on Varos and Mindwarp, which he novelised for the Target range. He also wrote the Find Your Fate book Invasion of the Ormazoids and the Target Missing Episodes novel Mission to Magnus, later to be made into a Big Finish audio story as part of The Lost Stories range. His other contributions to the Big Finish range are the Eighth Doctor story The Creed of the Kromon and the Sixth Doctor story Antidote to Oblivion.

Myth Makers: Prentis Hancock

Prentis was a regular cast member of the first season of Space: 1999 as Paul Morrow, and also appeared in a number of Doctor Who stories throughout the 1970s - Spearhead from Space and Planet of the Daleks with Jon Pertwee and Planet of Evil and The Ribos Operation with Tom Baker.


Other TV appearances include Spy Trap (as Lieutenant Sanders), Z-Cars, Colditz, Survivors, The New Avengers, Secret Army, Return of the Saint, Minder, Chocky's Children, The Professionals and The Bill. His film credits include The Thirty Nine Steps (1978) and Defence of the Realm (1985).


Using his own personal TARDIS, Robert Dick caught up with Prentis at the Doctor Who Appreciation Society convention The Capitol III in April 2018.


Myth Makers Ray Cusick

Myth Makers Robert Sloman

Born in 1926, Robert Sloman had an idyllic upbringing with most of his spare time spent on the beach in Devon. He went to University in Exeter, but was far more interested in sport (rowing for Torquay and rugby for Plymouth Albion and Devon).


He became interested in the theatre and, after joining a fortnightly fit-up repertory in Sidmouth, realised quickly he was a lousy actor and writing was better than performing!


After becoming a successful playwright, he was introduced to Barry Letts and thus began one of the most unique writing duos in the history of Doctor Who.


Robert and Barry co-wrote four scripts The Daemons, The Time Monster, The Green Death and Planet of the Spiders.


In this rare interview for Myth Makers, we find out the thinking behind these classic Doctor Who stories and why Robert moved on so quickly after having had such success in the series…

Myth Makers Shaun Sutton

During his long and varied career, Shaun Sutton has been an actor, writer, producer, director and ultimately Head of BBCtv Drama for twelve years.

He was there when William Hartnell left the series and was instrumental in casting Patrick Troughton as his successor. Three years later he was still there to help in the choice of Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor!

He was even there when Tom Baker joined the programme…

He and Sidney Newman oversaw what is now called ‘the golden age of television…’ it was certainly the golden age of Doctor Who.

Shaun shares with Nicholas Briggs his unique experiences in television production at the BBC and on Doctor Who in particular.




Myth Makers Stephen Gallagher

Stephen Gallagher is (in his own words) ‘a novelist, screenwriter and director.’ He began his career writing for radio drama and was recommended to the Doctor Who production team as a potential author.

This resulted in his writing the Tom Baker story Warrior’s Gate and subsequently the Peter Davison story Terminus.

He has written fourteen novels (so far) including Nightmare, The Boat House and The Spirit Box… his latest offering is The Kingdom of Bones.

He has acted as screenwriter on two of his novels Chimera and Oktober – which he also directed.Other TV credits include Bugs, Murder Rooms and as a series creator on Eleventh Hour.

Myth Makers caught up with him at FantasyCon 2007, held in Nottingham, where we garnered a fascinating interview about his career.
